The radiance of this woman’s umbrella caught my eye. It was a very bright September day and I saw her sit down on a north-facing bench, white umbrella aloft, about fifty feet in front of me. I’m grateful she let me take her portrait and she remained patient as I aborted several photos waiting for an unsteady stream of people to pass in the background … and take their shadows with them! Beyond that, I merely knelt in front of her and suggested she rotate the umbrella slightly to expose more of the decorative pattern. She and the sunlight did the rest.
