Sounding the horn

I heard the horn — a shofar — from a block away. These street preachers were making themselves available with their message on a Tacoma street corner. The man on the right was the most vocal of the two, speaking far too quickly for me to commit any phrase or quotation to memory. The man on the left boiled it down to three words: “God is alive,” he said. Both men were pleased to be photographed, but this was the only picture in the set in which I asked the man to blow his horn again. When I let them preview it on my camera, the man on the left smiled and said “now, that’s Tacoma right there.”
