College Football Virtual Standings, 2012

Published by Steve Campion. Category: Sports & Recreation

Kudos to the EWU Eagles for earning the best record among the state’s college football teams this year. For that achievement, we’d like to declare Eastern Washington University in Cheney our second annual WA-List virtual state champion.

With 9 wins and 2 losses, EWU won the Big Sky Conference title this year.  Head coach Beau Baldwin earned recognition as one of the conference’s two Coaches of the Year.  We’re the first to admit that our virtual accolade isn’t anywhere as important as those of the school or the conference, but we’ll dole out the praise anyway.

As in 2011, we ran “virtual standings” this fall on the WA-List home page for all seven local teams as if they were competing in a state league all their own. It was a way to track who was doing well regardless how big their schools were or on which level of college competition they played. Now that all the regular season games have finished (after WSU’s 31-28 victory over UW in today’s Apple Cup), we publish the final win-loss run-down for all the Washington college football programs. Added together, Washington teams were 40 wins, 34 losses, up from 31-42 last year.

Pacific Lutheran, last year’s virtual state champion at 6-3, improved to 7-2 this year, but that was only good enough for second place in 2012.  The EWU Eagles’ consistency on the field was tough to beat.  Over the last season and a half, Eastern has won 15 of its last 18 games.  Consistent in the other direction is Puget Sound, which has been 0-19 since a 42-31 victory over Pacific on Oct 30, 2010.
