The Crew When the Mariners Set Sail

Published by Steve Campion. Category: Sports & Recreation

This year’s major league baseball season opened last week when the Seattle Mariners split two games with the Oakland A’s in Tokyo.  After the wild time zone adjustment, both teams resume play tonight with their American opener tonight in Oakland.

But tonight is also the anniversary of the Mariner’s first game ever.  Thirty-five years ago, Apr 6, 1977, Diego Segui took the Kingdome mound and threw the first pitch in franchise history.  Segui, who played for the 1969 Seattle Pilots in their only major league season, gave up 5 hits and 6 runs and lasted only a few innings.  Despite two doubles by Bill Stein, the Mariners never caught up* and lost to the California Angels, 7-0.

In recognition of that anniversary, we list the men who played in that long ago April game.  Do you recognize any names?
